Brain tumours risks, mobile phones and children

On 8th & 9th September, the Radiation Research Trust brought together leading experts in the fields of science, politics and regulation from across the globe to debate the health effects of electromagnetic fields. This was the first time that such a conference was organised to include experts from both sides of the health debate (those that believe electromagnetic fields have negative effects on health and those that believe the opposite is true).

Entitled ‘Electromagnetic fields and health – a global issue’, the conference took place at the Royal Society, and was attended by a number of highly prominent speakers. These included speakers from world establishments such as ICNIRP, WHO, RNCNIRP and national bodies such as the UK Health Protection Agency and the MTHR. They were joined by scientists, politicians, lawyers and concerned citizens, each offering differing viewpoints in order to encourage discussion around risk assessment, precautionary measures, social policy and areas where further research is required.

Lennart Hardell, Professor of Department of Oncology, University Hospital, Orebro, Sweden research indicated children and teenagers are five times more likely to get brain cancer if they use mobile phones.

Professor Lennart Hardell concluded his presentation saying: “there is a consistent pattern of increased risk for acoustic neuroma & glioma after 10 years ipsilateral mobile phone use. Current standard for exposure to microwaves during mobile phone use is not safe for long term tumour risks and needs to be revised.”

Many scientists voiced concern for public health, especially for children, at the Radiation Research Trust Conference, including Professor Yury GRIGORIEV, Chairman of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, Russia. Professor Grigoriev gave a powerful presentation with regards to children. He said: “The potential risk to children’s health is very high and a completely new problem. Use of mobile phones for those under 18 or pregnant should be restricted. Children have a unique vulnerability as they grow and develop, there are “windows of susceptibility” periods when their organs and systems may be particularly sensitive to the effect of certain environmental threats. The existing standards cannot guarantee the safe, healthy development of the next generation.”

Lloyd Morgan, Director of the Central Brain Tumour Registry of the United States (USA) also gave a presentation at the Radiation Research Trust conference. Based on a 30 year latency time for brain tumours, he projects there could be up to 1.6 million mobile phone brain tumours in the USA by 2019. At a treatment cost of $250K per patient, this would cost $400 Billion. It would also require 32-fold more neurosurgeons eleven years from now.

The UK Radiation Research Trust are calling for the precautionary approach in line with the Chairman for the UK Health Protection Agency, Sir William Stewart. He recommended the use of mobile phones by children should be "discouraged" and "minimised" in 2000 and 2005.

Children should not use mobiles except in emergencies and should use hands-free devices or headsets or use text for limited communication purposes only.

Medical professionals, teachers and parents should be informed as a matter of urgency about the potential health risks associated with mobile phone use and given appropriate precautionary advice.

Another Important development

European Parliament Recommends Stricter Safety Limits for Cell Phones

ALBANY, NY--(Marketwire - September 18, 2008) - University at Albany, Institute for Health and the Environment - The European Parliament has voted 522 to 16 to recommend tighter safety standards for cell phones. In light of the growing body of scientific evidence implicating cell phone use with brain tumors, the Parliament says, "The limits on exposure to electromagnetic fields [EMFs] which have been set for the general public are obsolete."

The European Parliament "is greatly concerned at the Bio-Initiative international report concerning EMFs, which summarises over 1500 studies on that topic and which points in its conclusions to the health risks posed by emissions from mobile-telephony devices such as mobile telephones, UMTS, WiFi, WiMax and Bluetooth, and also DECT landline telephones.

I realise that there are conflicting beliefs in the scientific world over the health risk of using mobile phones - but what concerns me most is the fact that, despite an official DOH leaflet recommending that parents limit under 16's use to emergency only (Mobile Phones & Health 2001) no advice is relayed to patients - particularly the young - suffering from serious illness. I would have imagined, certainly in the case of brain tumour patients, official advice should be not to use these devices while there is still such uncertainty. However, I think the opposite is the case - I believe there has been a call from some quarters for young people to be able to use their mobile phones during their stay in hospital.

There can be no good reason not to follow a precautionary approach on such a serious matter - this is, I believe, one of the biggest problem we face - and we cannot afford to fail our young people.

With so much evidence now pointing to the possible harmful effects of elecromagnetic radiation, government and professionals must start to listen.
Allergy UK now recognise Multiple Chemical Sensitivity as a real condition and of these sufferers, 80% also have electricalhypersensitivity.
As a sufferer of both, my life, since the age of 28 has been a struggle for 18 years. In the end, the desperate need to be believed by Drs, family and friends becomes almost an illness itself.
We suffer so much ridicule and huniliation from the many sceptics who believe that "it is all in the mind" or "a bit eccentric" making it almost impossible to get any kind of reespect from anyone.
Now, with the right guidance from some wonderful professional people and new friends who are also sufferers, my health is better than it has been since 1990.
That is a long time to feel so ill and not know why.

As a Graduate Scientist, I have studdies the effects of mobile phones and their associated mast for over 8 years.
It beggars belief that industry and the government continue to insist that there is no definitive proof that exposuer to this microwave radiation has any adverse health effects, this in sppite of hunndreds of independent sciebtific studies and papers showing the opposite.
At a conference organised bt the Radiation Trust, held in London this month{ September 08} it became clear why they are able to state this so categorically. Mike Repacheli and Australina Scientist now working for the mobile phone inndustry, but recently as chief scientist for the WHO and responsible for setting the ICNIRP guidelines for emissions, adopted by the UK and many other western countries, but not by Russia and China, who have upper limots less than a tenth of that allowed here. When questioned as toi why they do not lower the ICNIRP limits, he said that there was no proven causal effect of cancer or othe illness from exposure to rhis radiation. When questiones about what criteria they used he said they had to have a 95% correlation. Cllearly if this standars is acceppted we can never state that there is a causal effect. The dangers from asbestos and tobacco would NEVER have come to light is this criterion had been applied.
We should all insist that, until a safe techology is found a strict precautionary approach should be applied, pparticularly for young people.
